The terrible price of victory. Two Marines lay dead in the sand amidst the fighting on Iwo Jima. Marines first landed on the island on February 19, 1945, after a pre-attack bombardment in which Allied bombers and warships had launched ton after ton of explosives at the island (by D-day, the Americans had hit the island with 6,800 tons of bombs and 22,000 Naval shells), but the Japanese defensive tunnels meant they were left unscathed. This turned what was expected to be a single week of fighting into five, inflicting heavy casualties on both sides. Japanese defenders fought almost to the last man on Iwo Jima, despite having no prospect of victory because they could not retreat and could not be reinforced. Of 21,000 Japanese troops stationed on the island, just 216 surrendered or were captured, some of whom were unconscious at the time IF THIS IS YOUR FAVOURIT FORUM TOO! Post your opinion below PLS. The Japanese actually inflicted more casualties on the Marines than they sustained, in terms of both killed and wounded..
All part of the change in Japanese military doctrine from defending at the water's edge to a concentrated defense in depth.

Very bloody battle. Glory to all fallen fighters.
I wonder if there was a stage in this war where the Japanese realized they made a huge error attacking America?

maybe after getting a taste of the atomic bomb?
I’ve always wondered why they even wanted to take them on.

May they rest in peace for what they need now is a nap in the slient does of death with there names etch in the book of souls
The pic shows the difficulty involved; look at the relatively flat terrain: a machine gun emplacement would wreck havoc with on coming marines

That's quite a gut wrenching picture.... RIP to all those that have given all for my freedom
Morbid question. What wounds would be most likely to have killed these two souls. Looking for entry/exit wounds, see none.
