The victorious nations of World War I imposed severe restrictions on the German's weapons production.
The armaments factory Rheinmetall circumvented the problem by buying the majority share package of the Solothurn Swiss armaments factory . Here was born the MG39 machine gun, modified and simplified in the MG42 model. This was the first General-purpose machine gun of the world, it means that it was the first machine gun that could be used as a support heavy weapon for the companies, thanks to the appropriate heavy pedestal, both as light machine gun platoon accompaniment. The secret was the possibility to replace the glowing barrel with a cold one in a few seconds, so avoiding any increase in the machine gun such the 12 kg of the system of water cooling. The MG39 provided a very high rate of shooting of infantry squad, so Germany kept the bolt action rifle, rather to produce an automatic rifle. The automatic rifle was produced during the war, but the two product models, the Walter G41 and the G43 were not a great success, as fragile and heavy, so, like the Russian Tokarev, were equipped with diopter and used by snipers. The Pz. B 39 was a single shot anti-tank gun, it was a direct evolution of the anti-tank rifle Mauser of World War I, it fired a 7.62 mm tungsten tip bullet housed in a cartridge case of 13 mm. At the beginning of the war still it had t some use, it could pierce an iron plate of 30 mm firing 120 meters away, on the Russian front it couldn't stop the Soviet tanks, so this heavy rifle who weighed 12 kg was quickly abandoned by German riflemen.
The MP40, an evolution of the previous MP38, was a practical, efficient and economica weapon which made extensive use of molded plastic and metal sheet, the MP38 was designed to arm the German paratroopers, then it was abundantly distributed to the infantry during the war.
The FG42 was an excellent and revolutionary weapon, designed to provide support to the paratroopers, mostly armed with MP38 and MP40, the project was so good that from this developed in the United States Machine Gun, Caliber 7.62 mm, M60 (Look for T 44 machine gun)
but The FG42 weapon was expensive and time consuming to produce and this will severely limited production.
The MP43 and its derivatives are a major revolution in the field of arms, marking the birth of the assault rifle in a caliber intermediate between that of the rifles and the machine guns / pistols, also the smart design allowed the manufacture of parts by many small and medium factories, maintaining safe production despite heavy Allied bombing.
