is Russia preparing for a major conventional war?
Russia wants to make the Western public think it does, while in fact it does not.
It is part of the asymmetric doctrine Russia has adopted because of the limited resources it has.
I won’t go into stats, I’m sure other Russian quorans will give you those eagerly, just a few personal observations.
I’m turning 41 this year. As a reserve officer who went through ROTC training as S-300 operator, I can be conscripted for the needs of war until I turn 55. Through 19 years I’ve been in reserve, I have never been called up for a re-training. If Ministry of Defense was really preparing for a major war, they’d probably want to call me to retrain once in a while to maintain on the list of personnel they could use on AA systems in service or in reserve. But - zero calls in 19 years. And none of my classmates who went on the same ROTC program were ever called in.
Or - if Russia was preparing for a major war, it would probably conduct civil defense drills in order to minimize the population losses - Russia is already outnumbered, so any sane leadership would probably at least try to salvage as much of the human resources as possible to win the war of scale, wouldn’t it? At least, when I was a kid in the Soviet Union, we’d have those civil defense drills every year at school. I’ve been living in Moscow for 23 years now. I’ve seen or heard of zero such civil defense drills.
The whole Syrian campaign was a showcase of new and modernized weaponry, tactical soldier gear, fighter and bomber planes, tanks and artillery. A display of capabilities, which are not en masse. Yes, there are thousands of highly skilled, experienced and equipped soldiers and officers. But not millions, which would have been required for a massive war.
The reason why Russia want to make the Western public think it does, has been expressed by Mr. Lavrov: “Russia is preparing for the war, while the US of A are preparing the war”.
And, really, can’t blame him after all that’s happened in Yugoslavia, Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, and Syria.
