In its 60 years of existence, Law Enforcement Exploring has introduced more than 34,000 youth to community policing.
Law Enforcement Exploring Celebrates 60 Years Of ServiceFor law enforcement, building and strengthening bonds within communities is crucial, and it starts with officers who can relate and connect with local citizens. This means diligent recruitment is imperative for the next generation of officers — a key objective of the Law Enforcement Exploring program, which marked its 60th anniversary in 2019, as well as its service to more than 34,000 youth since its inception.
Law Enforcement Exploring is a hands-on program open to young men and women who have completed the sixth grade through 20 years old and are interested in a career in law enforcement or a related field in the criminal justice system. The program offers young adults a personal awareness of the criminal justice system through training, practical experiences, competition and other activities.
“It’s very beneficial to have an Exploring post in your area. You get to train your future frontline and that’s very important. For the kids who are interested in law enforcement, you’re training them, you’re preparing them. They’ll know everything about your police department,” said a national youth representative for Law Enforcement Exploring in Alexandria, Va. “For the kids who are not interested in law enforcement, it gives them a chance to see the law enforcement in their area and learn what they’re doing. You really run deep ties with the community through the program — bringing law enforcement and the community closer together.”
