1- The politicians and a large portion of the American electorate are always looking for quick and cheap fixes.
2- For more than fifty years the politicians on the left have pursued an agenda that pushes ever more restrictive gun laws under the guise of “gun safety.” Every shooting tragedy that occurs offers an opportunity to advance that agenda regardless of whether or not the proposed legislation would have any substantive impact on the problem. If the existing laws don’t seem to be sufficiently addressing the problem their solution is to enact more laws. And so on and so forth until the Second Amendment is deleted. The left has seized upon anti gun legislation as their primary focus; such legislation makes them look and feel good, will likely get them re-elected, and is far easier and cheaper than addressing the more complex reasons for mass shootings.
3- For more than fifty years the politicians on the right have pursued any and all means to stymie the left’s agenda regarding gun control; in doing so they have established a foothold in the “red” rural areas of the country where any further gun legislation is anathema. The right wing politicians, whether or not they actually themselves believe in any bipartisan agreement over gun control they know that getting elected and staying in office depends on denying all manner of additional gun control. As Mitch McConnell has stated, “those who win elections make legislation, those who don’t go home.” Winning elections is therefore paramount, working cooperatively in the public interest is secondary. We live in an era where party is placed before country in an reflexive self survival mode. As the left has veered far left the right has reacted by veering far right resulting in a deeply divided nation.
