Elon Musk and Gayle King test drive his new Boring Company tunnel
From electric cars to spacecraft, tech titan Elon Musk is widely known as an industry disrupter. Tuesday night in Los Angeles, Musk unveiled the very first tunnel in what he hopes will become a network of underground highways. The test tunnel runs between the headquarters of Musk's SpaceX company and a parking lot behind a shuttered business a little over a mile away. "CBS This Morning" co-host Gayle King takes a ride through the new tunnel and talks to Musk about what inspired him to build it.
The answer to LA's nightmarish traffic or just a pipe dream from Elon Musk? Tonight the man behind PayPal, Tesla and SpaceX unveiled the prototype of his new loop tunnel under the streets of Hawthorne. Tom Wait reports.

How awesome would it be if we had infrastructure specifically designed to transport lots of people in vehicles on special tracks by means of public transport underground? I wonder why nobody has come up....oh waaaaaiiiit.

Ezzo Halabi Yeah. Maybe we can have a special vehicle that could transport critically ill or injured people. If we attached special markings on them and gave them priority on public roads, they could transport people more quickly than even ordinary vehicles too.

Mx Ios that’s a really good idea and they could make a special loud noise so people would know they were coming. Now what should we call these special vehicles☹️?

The idea is not for 1 tunnel, obviously we have subways, the idea is that if you stack them, you are able to get many more dimensions of roadway. It is a good idea and to say it's not is to basically be a moron. Imagine how much more efficient and safe it would be to have a layered tunnel network under the entire country. Implementing it is an entirely different story and almost near impossible. That said, Elon has a tendency to do the impossible.

How exactly is “The Loop” a technological leap? It’s one vehicle transported at a time, at 150 km/h? High velocity trains are faster than that, with more capacity. Boring miles and miles of tunnels is neither energy- nor cost-efficient. You need a car to enter it. It seems to be slow in processing multiple cars (get them all down, sort on to tracks, steer and orchestrate the entire thing). How is this better than reducing the number of cars altogether by offering a well organised public transport network? This is about another means of transporting cars. The way forward is to provide incentives to not use cars in the first place imho.
