Picked up this little guy the other day. Marlin Model 1891. It's the great-great granddaddy of the famous 39a and the 1st lever action repeater chambered in .22LR offered by anyone.
This is a "1st Variation" 1891, as it features a side loading gate in the receiver. These were made for one year only (1891)... as the tiny, outside-lubed cartridges would prove to be cumbersome to load through the gate for some folks, so Marlin changed to loading through a port in the magazine tube in 1892.
Along with the side loading gate, the 1st variations also wore a 3/4-length magazine and simple "sporting sights". Standard barrels were 24" octagon. This one was special ordered with a round barrel.

Thanks for posting the history of that. I have the same Marlin rifle with side loading gate, but octagonal barrel. It was my great grandmother’s squirrel rifle.

Winchester 1873s were chambered for 22lr. I think they beat marlin on that one.
