New to lever guns and I need some assistance. I’m working on an old Winchester 1892 .44 WCF for a friend. It didn’t fire when I first received the gun. After lots of cleaning and replacing the trigger, extractor, and some missing screws I’ve fired it twice. Both times the bullet casing mushroomed. I had to push a rod down the barrel to remove the casing. What is causing this? Thanks in advance.

Pack the chamber with clay and let it dry, then tap it out and measure it. If you do this make sure you clean all the clay out before trying to shoot it again.

Wrong cartridge. Is that even a 44wcf? It just looks tiny to me

The 44-40 will bell out a little bit on firing (some people that shoot BP favor it for that reason as it keeps fouling from going everywhere), but I don't think it does that much. That looks like the wrong bullet was crammed down the wrong case.
