Dad told kids to run for their lives when they pulled WWII bombs from water while fishing
Danny Thackray told his three kids to run for their lives when he realised they'd pulled a rocket propelled grenade and a World War II mortar from the water
A dad-of-three told his kids to run for their lives when an afternoon fishing ended up with them dragging two explosive devices out of the water.
Danny Thackray and his partner Bridget Madigan were magnet fishing when they ended up finding what turned out to be an old casing for a rocket propelled grenade.
They then pulled a live World War II mortar shell from the water at Henryd, and after calling the police bomb disposal experts were sent to the scene to blow the devices up.
Mr Thackray, 31, from Llanfairfechan , told the Daily Post: “We had been to Armed Forces Day with the kids on Saturday, which cost us a fortune, so we thought a quiet cheap day fishing for things with the magnet in the pool.
“I’ve found knives before and bullets but I realised straight away this was a bomb. There were two lives ones and three parts of ones that had already exploded.
“It was sat by us for hours.”
As soon as he realised what he had stumbled on, he raised the alarm.
“I was like ‘kids get out of here now’,” he said. “It looked live so we got the hell out of there.
“To think people come fishing up here and even go paddling.” They called 101 and police arrived and quickly summoned bomb disposal experts from 11 EOD Regiment from the Royal Logistics Corps based in Chester.
A controlled explosion, surround by 40 sandbags made it an explosive end to a weekend of high military drama for the family.
Mr Thackray’s 32-year-old partner Miss Madigan said she was astounded by the find, but said it had made her think again about making it a regular family outing. Miss Madigan said: “We all just ran. When they detonated the bombs the sandbags went flying everywhere. “The kids loved it yesterday, but they’re not allowed to come now.”
Magnet fishing involves using a neodymium magnet which can pull up huge weights from underwater. Mr Thackray’s can hold about 200lbs, but said he’ll be checking what he pulls up in future.
