What is the average effective range of a 9mm round fired from a handgun?
Father than you can shoot and expect to hit a target. Effective range is not a limitation of the bullet, but the abilities of the shooter. The gun or bullet is not able to aim itself.
As there is no “official” definition for effective range, the effective range would differ by each person’s definition.
The average person of average skill, average practice regularity and average familiarity with their pistol of choice the distance is somewhere between 15 and 30 yards. The average person would be someone who owns one to “a few” guns, has around 5–15 years of gun ownership experience, likely to have taken a class in firearms safety but not a class on marksmanship. They don’t hunt with their gun, they don’t participate in competitions, visit the range every few months practicing pistol on a 8 inch paper bullseye target at a distance of 20 to 75 feet, and may or may not own the gun for protection purposes within the home.
I am someone who is not the average person. I own more than “a few”, I practice probably more than average, I have taken half dozen classes to improve my marksmanship, I take ability to defend myself with a firearm very seriously, I don’t actively compete but have participated when invited, I sometimes go to the range frequently as twice a week or infrequent as once a year, I demand high accuracy and proficiency with every gun I own (except the musket) and I like to challenge myself with unknown distance targets with nearly every gun I own, even if the distance is a bit far for whatever I have in hand.
Due to the way I practice with emphasis on pushing limits and adding challenges, every pistol I own the effective range is at least 100 yards. With 9mm specifically, it is 120 yards with Glock 19, 175 yards with Hi Point C9, 150 yards with Yugo M57 with 9mm barrel. The effective ranges are limited by bullet drop, I can reliably connect with 11x17 sheet of paper target up to 250 yards away but with bullet drop around 15 feet it’s not a practical distance!
Despite all this, there are plenty of people who are yet even better shots than I am. I’m really not that great with pistols anyway, long guns are what I am naturally good at,
