US gunmaker Colt to stop making rifles – including AR-15 – for civilians
Chief executive says there are enough sporting rifles on market
Company to focus on making guns for military and police
Gunmaker Colt says it is suspending its production of rifles for the civilian market, including the popular AR-15.
Colt’s chief executive officer, Dennis Veilleux, says it is not permanently ending production but believes there is already an adequate supply of sporting rifles on the market. He said in a statement on Thursday the company will concentrate on fulfilling military and law enforcement contracts with its rifle manufacturing.
The company, based in West Hartford, Connecticut, has received some criticism from gun rights advocates for moving away from the civilian market.
Veilleux said in the statement the company remains committed to the second amendment and is adapting to consumer demand.
A national gun control debate has focused on access to AR-15s and other assault-style rifles because of their use in mass shootings.

Very bad news for Colt I believe ! This is the first time I had seen a gun company give in to political pressure . I did not read the full article yet , but if it is completely true I think I will not be purchasing any colt products at all !

You must have missed it when S&W almost went broke after adding magazine drop safeties to all of their pistols.

Doesn't surprise or really bother me.
The AR market is flooded and many of the offerings are better quality than Colt and extremely competitive money wise. I could see other manufacturers pulling out of the AR market. I'd think margins are pretty thin on complete guns as well as many parts and accessories. So again, no surprise

colt has not really been competitive or a powerhouse in sales for a very long time............
they have been riding the brand name as their main selling point.......which is a purty poor business practice since that is more or less all they bring to the table...
