take a look at the M4A1 Carbine—the current standard issue service weapon in the US Army.
The M4A1 Carbine is an assault rifle/carbine, chambered in 5.56x45mm NATO and operating via the Stoner expanding gas system (not technically direct impingement) with a multi-lug rotating bolt. The M4A1 was officially adopted in 1994 with SOCOM, but only became the standard service weapon after it was decided to convert all M4s into M4A1s in 2012.
The M4A1 differs from the M4 in that the M4A1 is full-auto/semi rather than 3 burst/semi, has a heavier barrel, and ambidextrous fire selector. Initial M4A1s were produced by Colt, but production has since shifted to FN Herstal as of 2013.
Pictured above, the top carbine is a potential present-day set up for a Army grenadier, with the stock fully extended, newest version of the M68 Close Combat Optic (Aimpoint CompM4), AN/PEQ-15 IR Illuminator and M320 Grenade Launcher (AG36).
The bottom carbine is a possible Block 1 SOPMOD accessory set up from the early 2000s with the stock fully retracted. The featured accessories are the Trijicon TA01NSN ACOG (4x32), AN-PEQ-2 IR Illuminator, foregrip, and Visible Bright Light II.
