the AR-15 can be a military style gun.
But you know what else is a military style gun?
This is a Tippmann X7 Phenom M16 style gun. Scary, isn't it? And I'm not going to argue that it's semi automatic vs automatic, because it's not.
This thing has select fire: semi, burst and fully auto. It fires up 15 shots per second and can fire 1400 shots before reloading. This is more military style than the AR in that respect. And forget measly .223 or .308 caliber of the AR, this comes with a full .67 caliber bore, larger than the .50 caliber the military uses to rip tanks and planes in half. This beast is literally designed to splatter enemies all over the battlefield.
Scared yet? Then let me terrorize you further. I can get this for 500$ on the internet, delivered with ammo to my house over night with no background check, age requirement, tax stamp or licence. No police, government agency, or even my parents need to know I have it or where I got it, and it's completely legal.
There's only one thing keeping this military style gun from being on the 24 hour news cycle as the latest in the war on regular Americans by the NRA.
It's a paint ball gun.
“Wait a minute! That's not what I meant by military style gun! I meant……”
See, that's the beauty of “military style gun”. It means what you want it to mean. It's not my fault if you misinterpret the meaning to mean what YOU think it means. Is It “military style?" Yes it is. Is it a “gun"? Yup. Just like a water gun is a gun, a nail gun is a gun, or a nerf gun is a gun. So, by definition, it is a military style gun.
Is it a military grade assault rifle? Not by a long shot. But neither is an AR-15 built to civilian specifications. No amount of calling it a military style gun will change that fact. Sure, the AR is at least a firearm chambered with the same ammunition, but in the world of firearms, that's meaningless.

Politicians use language to elicit an emotional response so you will contribute to their campaign so they can continue to keep a job that doesn't require them to actually do much. Language can be manipulated to mean different things to different people.
Stop being manipulated, and stop manipulating others.
Update: Yesterday in NYC, a man drove a truck into a group of cyclists, killing 7, then fleeing on foot brandishing a couple of paintball guns.
