I'm toying with the idea of picking up a machine gun in the future as I do more outdoors events, I'm aware that they're heavy and not everyone's cup o' tea but I'm also not sure what other cons they have, specifically I've heard internals need replacing regularly but I don't really know my way around AEG internals at all; ideally I'm looking at an mg42 but I'd consider other guns as well but I'd be grateful for more input from people that have actually used them before I take this any further.

The gear boxs are slightly stronger they dont really need anything doing to them. You will have to change your stile of play these guns are heavy and ths whole point of them is to be support and allow your team cover to move. you could blow through 6000 rounds and not get a single kill all day. They are great for base defence and ambush just dont be expecting to run arround with one.

The people that have told you that the internals need replacing regularly are lying to you. They need no more or less maintenance than any other AEG.
The main con to the MG42 will be the massive hole it leaves in your bank account!
As the proud owner of an M249 Para I say go for it! Use it as it's intended, don't try and make it into a 50RPS twatenwerfer and develop your love for laying about in the mud covering your mates!
