Those rifles were common mailorder rifles until the 1972 gun laws restricted sales to the general public. Interestingly, the liberal gun law prior to 1972 was based on the most liberal gun laws that Germany ever had, the RWaffG of 1938, the gun law that is commonly but wrongfully blamed as introduced by Hitler to disarm Germany. Now the used gun market in Germany is flooded with those rifles that are more plentiful than licensed buyers.
