Is Hamas an honorable and heroic organization?
Was Pyrrhus heroic? Pyrrhus was the King of Epirus and he tried to fight Rome. He won a few battles but lost so many men he lost his kingdom. All those people died for nothing but a respite.
Arafat used to call the Palestinians ‘the heroes’ not because they win but because they will never give up. It’s a potent mythology. In some cases, like with the Seminoles in Florida, fighting was the only way to preserve their existence as Seminoles; they would have been and were ‘ethnically cleansed’. The Israelis feel the same: the motto Never Again in Israel refers to something extremely specific, that the Jews of Masada, knowing they would be killed by the Romans, held on to life as long as they could, committing mass suicide only the night before they would have been killed anyway.
Are you seeing a point emerging? When Mordecai Anielewicz wrote, ‘At least I got them to fight’ in the ruins of the Warsaw Ghetto, they were fighting because the Germans were going to murder them. To extend Dylan Thomas: do not go gently into that good night but rage, rage against the dying of the light so fight the beasts as long as you can.
See the point yet? The Israelis aren’t exterminating Arabs. They only want to get along with them. The Israelis aren’t eradicating Arab culture in Israel: just ask Arab Israelis, who have more freedoms than anyone in the Arab world.
By those standards, no, Hamas is a bunch of deluded fools who claim to be Muslim but who are so non-Islamic that they place more attachment on the ownership of pieces of dirt than they do on human lives. They believe in literal subjugation instead of spiritual subjugation, of forcing literal submission to their weapons instead of spiritual submission to God. They ignore all the beauty of the Quran to describe themselves as the ‘people who love death’. The Quran is about God’s love for all humanity and they are empty of it.
