I’m going to rank them by what I think is the most effective/best tanks, to what I think aTire the least most effective/best tanks.
Number - 3. The Panther
I think this tank is often overshadowed by it’s brother, the Tiger, but I think this tank is just as effective at it’s job. First off this tank has really good protection for it’s crew, the nice slope on the front makes its effective thickness nearly impenetrable for the typical allied tanks of the time. Its gun allows it to outrange quite a few allied tanks, including the early Shermans, which had great trouble taking this thing down. (‘till we caught up some) Why is this at the last of my list though? It had its own issues. It’s initial problem was that of numbers, only around 3000 were made, that sounds like a-lot, but over 50,000 Shermans were made by the US of A, over ten times the amount of Panthers, this meant that, while it was a really effective tank, there wasn’t enough of them to change the outcome of the war. It also suffered from mechanical issues, (as all tanks do) but compared to other tanks of the war, this one was harder to fix, if one of the big wheels that support the tracks broke, and if it was one of the ones in the back, then the crew would have to take out the overlapping wheels to replace it, this used up time, space and energy. So many of these things were just abandoned because the crew just couldn’t fix ‘em.
Number 2 - FT-17 Renault.
Okay, two things before I start on this one, 1. I KNOW that this is not technically a WW2 tank. And 2. And that is the only reason that this vehicle gets the no.2 spot.
This tank really didn’t see much combat during WW2, and the ones that did, didn’t make much of an impact on the outcome of the battles. However, this tank plays a big part in the history of tanks. This is the very first tank to feature a turret, without this wonderful and adorable vehicle, the world may have a very different type of tank. These things have been all over the world, many nations used these to experiment, test and base their own tank designs off of. Japan based its early tanks off of this, Germany did as well, and so did - Britain, the USA, Russia etc. Even modern tanks still use designs based off of this machine. And thats why this is my favorite tank.
Number 1 - The Sherman
The Sherman, while a famous tank, is so underrated, you hear folks saying stuff like -The Shermans sucked! or German tanks ate through these things! etc. etc. etc. And to a point, they are correct, these tanks are not the best by themselves, on a one vs. one battle, the German tank would most likely win. These things were nicknamed after cigarette lighters because they had a nasty tendency to burn when they got hit. But the thing that I think makes this the best tank of WW2 (not the best tank to be inside of mind you) is logistics. It can be shipped on standard train flatbeds, which US companies already have a lot of.
(Panthers and Tigers won’t fit on those)
And they are designed to be easy/simple to repair, if one breaks down, the crew can easily repair it and continue their mission.
And they can be modified to preform in other roles as well!
Sherman Crocodile with Flamethrower
Sherman with anti-mine modification - These swing around and blow up mines hidden in the ground.
These were used on D-Day, they weren’t super effective, most of them sank on their way to the shore due to the bad weather, but hey, did I mention this could float?
This one has a push-blade on it, like a tractor/bulldozer.
And then there are different versions of it -
The Sherman Firefly - Has a 17-Pounder gun on it that can deal with the German’s super tanks.
And then the Jumbo Sherman, a heavy tank version of the Sherman.
The Sherman served in every theater of WW2, from Germany to Japan. And they didn’t let us down. They even saw continued service after WW2 in Korea and in wars between other nations. Versatile, feasible, affordable and trustworthy, the Sherman is simply an amazing vehicle
