Everyone hates us.
Arabs are perhaps the most antagonized people on the planet and are despised everywhere. To the world, Arabs are backwards, oppressive, medieval, greedy, violent, intolerant, and dirty colonisers, terrorists, dictators, and oppressors. I’m sorry I had to use all these words but it sums up how the world stereotypically views us.
In fact, being an Arab is so bad that there are people who don’t want to associate themselves with us in any way, shape or form for the reasons mentioned above. I’ve seen Meghrebis, Persians, Uyghurs, Kurds, and Indians detest us because we “colonized them and forced the Arabic language and script upon them”. I’ve seen these people call for the dropping of the Arabic script as a way of disassociating themselves with us.
Even Egyptians…. yes, there are Egyptians who despise Arabs and the Arabic language because an Egypt with Muslims is not Egypt in its real form.
Do you know how heartbreaking that is? Do you know what it feels like to be the most hated people? Do you know what it feels like to see yourself caricatured on foreign newspapers as a barbarian? Do you know what it feels like to hear how much people hate us on the news? Do you know what it feels like to be threatened by a crazy nationalist? Do you know what it feels like to see people wanting to cut all links to your identity? Do you know what it feels like to hear jokes and insults towards you and your identity?
