What makes Iran such powerful country?
I particularly like Ali Bakhtiari's answer and I was thinking something similar along the lines. But I'll take a different approach and in this approach I'll answer why is Iran powerful (since no one doubts Iran's power and influence in the region) and why the US wants to attack Iran.
Iranians are smart. Very smart. But the Iranian government is on another level of being smart. The Iranian government and in extension the military apparatus of Iran is the most pragmatic, versatile and proactive that I have ever seen. And where the Iranian regime outshines everyone is their geopolitics acumen. The Americans would have been better off if they had half the geopolitical knowledge that Iran possesses. The disparity in terms of geopolitical knowledge between America and Iran is like their disparity in terms of the know how to build a 5th Generation Fighter Jet.
Everything the United States have sought to accomplish in the Middle East after wasting hundreds of billions of dollars, not to mention the human cost, Iran has accomplished with one percent of the cost. Think about it. America wanted a foothold in Iraq. Iran has a bigger foothold in Iraq. Realizing they can't compete with Iran in Iraq, the US switched to Syria. For a while things were going well until Iran arrived. Now Iran has a bigger foothold in Syria. Saudi Arabia wanted a foothold in Yemen. They called their American allies for help. Well Iran has a bigger foothold in Yemen. And this is what frustrates America about Iran. It's the way a country with a non comparative military, non comparative military equipment, chicken change military budget can out best a mammoth with the largest military, most sophisticated equipment and the most formidable alliance in NATO and Gulf States. This is the problem America is trying to get rid of. This is why America wants to attack Iran.
The Iranians had a question to answer. How do you counter an adversary that has surrounded you on all sides with military bases and sanctions? The answer for the Iranians is to make sure they can't launch an attack from those countries housing their military bases. As a result, the United States has military bases in Iraq, a country that won't permit an attack on Iran from its territory. The US has a military presence in Syria, a country they have no political relation with and so they can't attack Iran from there either. The other countries closer to Iran with US bases is Qatar and UAE and those countries value their safety way too much so as to do something as foolhardy as facilitate an attack on Iran. I know what you are thinking- Saudi Arabia! Here's the great irony: Saudi Arabia will not permit an attack on Iran from their territory. The birthplace of Islam cannot be seen as supporting attacks on another Muslim and this too inspite of the glaring animosity between these two countries.
Iran wields great geopolitical knowledge the kind that is not taught in any University of the world. And this makes Iran very powerful.
