the frontal section of the Mi-28 attack helicopter look weird
It does look ugly but the Russian didn't design it to win the “Looks” contest. Those design was made for a purpose and that being rugged. You can see the gun mounts and compare that to the beautiful AH-64 Apach gun mount. But when you see the Mi-28 in action, you can see thats its rugged. Simples are used to maintain the Havoc
When you look at the entire design approach of Russian attack helicopters, you can see it was design to be very easy to build and maintain and above all, functional. They didn't focus on making the Mi-28 to win the beauty contest. Good design is always ideal but for the Russians, making it work is what counts over looks. The cost of making the Mi-28 with its basic design is a lot more cheaper than the complicated Apache. When we look and compare the Mi-28, not much sophisticated tooling was needed as compared to the Apache. Its a lot heavier than the Apache but in terms of safety, the Mi-28 has some edge. Even in variety of environment, the Mi-28 is robust.

The AH-64 Apache is a more expensive helicopter due to technology and labour cost. But it has the aggressive design that American can feel proud off. Very capable but not as efficient and reliable as the Hi-28 Havoc as tested by the Iraqis and the Swedish.
Some will say i want a weapon to fit, not fly into a beautify contest. There are many aircraft that’s a lot more wired than the Mi-28. Some of my favourite helicopters include the AH-64D Apache, Mi-35 Hind, Bell UH-1N and even the cumbersome AH-1W Super Cobra. What works is the one that can deliver.

The AH-64 is an awesome machine. No other helicopter delivers a power message to its enemies. It means business.
The KA-52 Alligator is another machine that is damn rugged. Design over beauty as some say.
For the Mi-28, we can on field repairs using basic tools and thats what the Mi-28 is all about. You don't need complicated and expensive parts to service the helicopter.
