For George W. Bush, the goal was the destruction of al-Qaeda, the total defeat of the Taliban, and a “stable and free and peaceful” Afghanistan. For Barack Obama, it was a degraded Taliban that could be reasoned with but would have torenounce violence, respect women, and abide by the Afghan constitution. For Donald Trump, it was just a reduction in violence and a clear path to the door—the Afghans themselves would have to figure out the rest.

Does anyone here think they will follow through with the "reduction in violence"? And if they do as soon as our troops leave will it stay that way? I'm guessing you can wish in one hand and crap in the other see which fills up quicker..

There is always fighting going on in Afghanistan. Violent place. Always has been as far as I can remember. The only difference when we leave is they will killing themselves more instead of our troops.

For the Afghani's, there is no central government, nor are they tied to the Taliban. It is only "districts (provinces), tribes and war-lords". Nobody outside of the province or tribe is trusted, and war-lords last as long as they can deliver to the tribe or province. Our Special Operations Forces know this, only too well.
Our State Department Mooks and politicians (this includes career generals) either don't acknowledge the above, or choose not to.
