Which defense industry is more capable: Brazilian, Indian, Turkish, or, South African? Why?
By Harun Resit Aydin, Former Lieutenant
It’s difficult to make a far statement that one country is more capable, because none of them is one of the major players in defense industry such as USA, China and Russia, but are coming right behind these countries anywhere in the middle.
They are new and growing industries just like their economy and are promising new players who have an open way to the top. It would be a better comparison in specific fields instead to make an overall judgement. Each of these countries have their own strength and qualities in different fields.
Turkey is a very capable player in developing high quality armed or intelligence UAV’s, avionic systems and electronic warfare systems for air platforms, armored vehicles and many different subsystems for the aerospace industry, naval and ground forces.

India is very good in developing missile systems, nuclear and space technology.
South Africa has a years long experience in some light air systems, handguns, rifles.
Brazil is the most advanced among these countries in aviation industry.
If we look to the recent ranking of their defense companies in worldwide 100:
India: 2 companies
Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd, Bharat Electronics Ltd.
Total: 3.898 billion usd
Turkey: 5 companies
Total: 3.898 billion usd
Turkey: 5 companies
Aselsan, Turkish Aerospace Industries, STM, BMC, Roketsan.
Total: 4.482 billion usd
South Africa: 1 company
Total: 4.482 billion usd
South Africa: 1 company
Denel.
Total: 377 million usd
Brazil: 1 company
Total: 377 million usd
Brazil: 1 company
Embraer.
Total: 593 million usd
When we look to the outcomes, the statistics, future perspectives, it seems that Turkey and India have the most promising future in the field of defense industry. South Africa and Brazil coming behind, but have also their special abilities in the field. The only critic and complain of myself for India is that it still imports too many products from abroad, this have to decrease because it has all kind of necessary resources and experts.
