The best fishing trip i ever had was in January of 2009. I had just graduated college, and my dad booked us a trip to go bass fishing at Lake El Salto, Mexico. It was the best 3 days of fishing i ever experienced, and i will never forget it. My dad and I went with my grandpa and uncle, so there were 4 of us total. Each day we changed partners so we all got to fish with one another. In 3 days we caught 774 large mouth bass, and the only reason we know how many we caught is because each day we had a Mexican fishing guide and he had one of those manual clickers that you click every time you want to count something. So in the end, 4 of us caught 774 bass which averages to 193.5 fish caught each and 64.5 fish per person per day.
The bass would pretty much bite anything too, but some baits caught more fish than others, like the red eye shad. the red eye shad had recently come out onto the market and was a relatively new bait, and i tied it on one day right after lunch and proceeded to catch 16 bass on the first 16 constitutive casts with the largest being over 7 lbs, while my dad hadn't caught anything during those 16 casts and he was giving me a hard time, because i didn't have another red eye shad for him to throw, lol. The only thing that didn't happen that we had hoped for, is nobody caught a double digit fish. My dad caught a 9 lb+ on his first cast of the first day while it was basically still dark, while i got hung up in a tilapia net on my first cast of the first day, lol. That 9 lber was dad’s biggest of the trip, while both my grandpa and uncle both caught 8lbers as their biggest, and i caught multiple 7’s for mine. So i got my but kicked in the big fish derby, but thats ok, because it was the most fun you can have with your clothes on, lol
And the Quality of the bass was amazing. We caught so many fish over 5 lbs that we made a rule that we couldn't drink a beer unless we earned it by catching a 5lb+ fish, but we would catch the big fish faster than we could drink the beer (probably because im a light weight and dont drink very often, but in all seriousness, we caught a lot of big uns. Speaking of beer, the resort we stayed at kept plenty of beer and soda in the boat, and they had amazing authentic Mexican food that they fed us each night. Every time we got back to the resort for lunch and dinner (after fishing) they would be waiting on us with a tray of margaritas. And the fishing guides were great too. They were limited on their English, but they do know enough to communicate and they know their bass fishing. Dude would be like “cast by that tree” so i would, and 9 times out of 10 i would catch a bass where he said to cast.
It really was an amazing experience, and hope i can take my son there one day so he can experience the same thing that i did. in-case your wondering, the place we stayed at that took care of everything is called “El Salto Lodge” and i would 100% recommend this place to anybody who wants to catch lots of big bass and experience authentic Mexican culture. I cant wait to go back!
