The history of Lothar Walther gun barrels
HPS Target Rifles of Gloucestershire choose Lothar Walther custom-made barrels for most of their custom rifle builds for Target Rifle and F-TR. but also upon request choose from the various options available from Lothar Walther to suit any rifle. Director of HPS Target Rifles, Matthew Wade, told us that through working closely with the team at Lothar Walther, every rifle is built with a custom barrel, receiving the benefit of the German company’s experience and knowhow about barrels.
HPS receives regular shipments of barrels and keeps a steady stock of .30 calibre barrels, with others available within approximately eight weeks. Each barrel is machined in-house at HPS Target Rifles to fit individual rifle actions before being tested, polished and sent for proof testing. Customers of HPS have gone on to compete internationally at world-class levels and also within the UK at the National Rifle Ranges, Bisley.

A name that is the hallmark of quality, innovation and a vast range of products for marksmen, hunters and nature lovers. With more than 90 years of experience, the world’s largest range of barrels and sub-calibre tube systems as well as various crossbows are available to customers.
How it all started
Lothar Walther, engineer, founded LOTHAR WALTHER in Zella-Mehlis Thueringen on 1 July 1925. As the youngest son of Carl Walther, the founder of the world-famous gun factory, he grew up in a family that had been steeped in firearms manufacture for generations. At this time, the towns of Zella-Mehlis and Suhl were the centres of the German gun industry.
The experience gained over many years of gun manufacture provided Lothar Walther with special expertise in the production of button-rifled barrels of the highest accuracy.
After the Second World War and the associated move to Baden-Württemberg, Lothar Walther chanced a new start in Königsbronn, in the south-west of Germany.
1935
As a member of the German National Pistol Team, Lothar Walther won many German Championships and the bronze medal at the 1939 World Championships. Having always competed at the highest levels in international target shooting, he had an intimate knowledge of the requirements of shooters.
From the beginning of the 1960s, Lothar was supported by his sons. Klaus Walther, the son of the founder and trained precision mechanic and master tool maker, sportsman and impassioned huntsman, ran the company up to 1996.
Since 1995, the North American market is supplied by an independent company with headquaters in Atlanta, USA.
Today
Today, Dr Frank Walther and Gerd Walther are responsible for the management of the company. Both gained broad engineering experience and technical knowledge by working for different companies in Germany and abroad.
Equipped with the latest technical machinery, LOTHAR WALTHER currently manufactures Button-rifled barrels from special gun steel and stainless steel, in more than 240 different calibres for target shooting, hunting, muzzle-loading and air guns.
